I personally like mullvad VPN, but I'm curious about the other "mainstream" VPNS like proton, nordvpn etc.

A excellent alternative to mullvad is https://nym.com/ mullvad only has 2 hops but nym has 5 thats 2 more than tor! and accepts xmr just like mullvad!

Depends on what you want to do with your VPN. If you are looking for some kind of anonymity, none of the mainstream solutions will be good. It will likely be the same for all other providers tho.
