I have a question for you
What is the best first programming language to learn for you and why ?
This is a question I wish I had asked when I started.

I've done projects in c/c++, c#, SQL (structured query language), perl, python, and shell/bash primarily. I started with basic/vb about 10 years earlier than the average birth age of a user on BF. I'm a fan of development and encourage anyone who's interested to just go do it. #HelloWorld

What are you learning and/or trying to accomplish?

Definitely depends on what you want to accomplish.
PHP and JS are good for web

Probably Python. Cross platform, learnig curve not as high as C/C++/Java.

C

You learn about everything you need to know, it's a good base for all the other languages you'll want to learn and it is so simple it's quick to learn. (simple doesn't mean easy)
You can probably learn C in a week. (learn doesn't mean master)

Then, learn Bash/Python for quick scripts. (Then C++ if you are tired of writing every function from scratch in C)

In general, the correct question is - for what purpose, then you can answer what to study

Visual Basic it the most powerful and easy to use language. I make all my software in Visual Basic.

Started a lot with web so HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL to begin with were essential and moved on from there.

It was a lot easier to learn with projects rather than pointless code lessons that meant nothing though

I think sql or python as its easier to learn than some of the other languages. and then when you learn it, you can dive into others.
