Tor can improve privacy, but it doesn’t make you magically anonymous.

It protects your traffic routing, not your behavior. .onion sites can be useful because they keep traffic inside the Tor network, but you still need good habits (no personal logins, careful downloads, browser hygiene).

If you need privacy, Tor helps; if you expect total anonymity, nothing really guarantees that.

yeah the way it becomes not anonymous is timing attacks in extreme cases but also if you willingly submit info tied to a known identity (reuse a username etc)

Back in my day I could eat onions raw. Not so much anymore, I can't stand the breath I have afterwards. Onions are definitely not anonymous. Your breath will be noticed if you eat this vegetable.

Actually when you use the tor browser (so you use the tor network) your request to the server is encrypted with 3 differents keys (from 3 servers that constitute your tor circuit) so the request can only be decrypted by passing in the tor circuite in the right order (+ SSL encryption if configured by the server).

It applies for every request even on a non-onion website but there probably is a difference in the connection to an onion link (as we can see there is a proxy for the onion site in the tor circuit)
Hope that it helped you

Your friends are partly right: Tor provides anonymity (hides your IP/identity) but the "secure" part depends on what you do with it.
Why they say it's not fully anonymous: Tor hides your network identity, but if YOU reveal personal info (login to accounts, use real names, poor browsing habits), you're no longer anonymous.
About .onion sites: Yes, use them. They stay entirely within Tor's network, maximizing both security and anonymity. Stick to legitimate .onion versions of known services.
