Texhnolyze -- bleak anime with a boring start that starts to kick off around episode 5.
Ergo Proxy -- plot oriented futuristic/scifi/dystopian adventure story that is well written, but kind of pretentious.
Anything by Satoshi Kon, the best anime director ever.
School Days -- not very good but a must watch for a dedicated fan.

I basically only get hooked on these types of series. No clue why, but a bunch of my favorite anime is shit no one will ever watch. So I have a few for you.

Welcome to the NHK, GTO, Elfen Lied, Deadman Wonderland, GATE, and Monster Musume is absolute smut, but still a fun series.
Also, if you ever watched FLCL and liked it, Deadleaves is a movie with a very similar vibe.
