In my opinion, sword art online: the initial chapters strive to be overly sentimental with the death of the first group, but the reality is that those characters had only appeared for 1 or 2 chapters at most.
There isn't enough time to become attached to any character for their deaths to affect you. The narrative includes too many poorly executed sentimental elements.

Evangelion. The whole project was rushed, blew through its budget before the last episodes were made, and the director was horribly depressed at the time. The end result is a poorly paced anime that people ended up looking way too deeply into to find their own meaning.
Yeah, I know people will say "It's just too deep for you!", but the reality is that it was a mess of a production that managed to get lucky in finding a fanbase willing to overlook its flaws.
