XMPP with OTR & Session

OTR is from 2001 and uses weak crypto, less than 2000 bits in the DH keys.
Session is based on the "Oxen Software Stack" and uses "Lokinet" as anonymization software by default, which you cannot change unfortunately. No Tor option far and wide.

If u ask me, the best is self-hosted XMPP with OMEMO (the new and improved encryption) instead of OTR. Yall mfs need to stop using OTR already, the crypto is shite. You just like it because the messages "disappear" after a session.

libotr gets still maintained by Cyberpunks the whole CNW and Russian Scene used it over years and it has proved itself to be secure
in many court cases where the FEDS were not able to decrypt anything till this day - even with a low key-length - so dont come with this argument

that the lower key-length means it would be "obsolete" or somenthing that is not true. but im sharing ur opionion on session ! and i would also still
preffer & recommend the use of a self-hosted XMPP server.

session was pretty good but not that reliable when i used it a few years ago, but a young college kid created it, if that means anything.

because other messengers don't have such an audience and ease of use

brother, everybody knows that russian cyber criminals play the game on easy mode due to a lack of intergovernmental cooperation. Most of them also use telegram, does that make telegram the cryptographic gold standard?
key lengths in asymmetric crypto makes a big difference. I have read research papers from 2015 that pretty much show how improved pre-computation and algorithms can make it possible to real-time decrypt DH with keys of around 1024 - 1700 bits with the budget of an average academic institution (with reasonable calculations showing that intelligence agencies can go higher than that). the paper name is "Imperfect Forward Secrecy", if you want to read it.

Telegram is a honeypot.
Signal requires having a burner phone.
Tox is DIY cryptography.

Session was started as a Signal fork and doesn't require a burner phone, so it's the best choice

Session, and XMPP via tor + OTR or OMEMO And a trusted XMPP server like exploit.im, thesecure.biz, xmpp.jp... Doesn't get any better then that
