Is there any advice on how to search a text file faster? I have a strong PC and ive been searching for a specific SSN in the first file of two and hours later im only on line 350 million.

Saving this command, you are goated for this one. I posted using powershell earlier but it looks like grep would be the way to go if you want to avoid extracting. Can one use grep on windows?

You can grep in windows through WSL if you have that installed.

I recommend ack, ag, or ripgrep instead. Waaaay faster and can either be found in distro repos or on github.

ack 1999 | grep LASTNAME | tee results.txt

would be a good start. I don't recommend searching for the full birth date because some of the results have the wrong birth date, but the right person and social if that makes sense. This command would search everyone born in that year with the lastname you choose (in caps), and put it in a file called results.txt. You can then search through a much smaller and managable file (results.txt) to find what you're looking for.

Edit: Saw you're searching for an SSN you already know.

ack SSN# | tee results.txt

will be way faster than regular grep, and lightyears faster than a GUI program.

I've got big GB part files, last one got to 18/19 before shitting the bed, how do you resume interrupted download?

tried pause, replace, resume, and it results in a 6.9 KB file

EDIT: Pause download screws up regular download too. What am I supposed to do?
