I don't think coffee should be considered a drug. It's a natural plant product that people have consumed for centuries.

But coffee contains the stimulant caffeine, which acts on the brain and body like other psychoactive drugs. So I'd say it qualifies as a drug.

Yep, caffeine is a stimulant yet it's relatively mild compared to actual drugs of abuse. I drink coffee daily and don't feel controlled by it.

You can develop dependence on caffeine though, getting withdrawal symptoms if you stop abruptly. People self-medicate with coffee addictively.

most coffee drinkers including me don't exhibit addictive patterns. I see it as more of a habit than an addiction.

Still, caffeine alters brain chemistry and mood. Anything with drug-like effects on the mind and body could reasonably be called a drug in my opinion.

Technically yes, yet equating a morning coffee to illicit drug use is extreme.

The effects may differ in degree, but caffeine does bind to receptors and affect the brain. So coffee is a psychoactive stimulant by definition.
