Is Proton Really Secure?

In the early days, double password encryption etc, I thought Proton was the real deal. It is so commercial now, especially their VPN I'm not sure if they can actually be trusted. What are your thoughts? You probably know something I don't about Proton. But I'm just curious as to what others think.

They respond to legal requests, so if you're already on a government radar, Proton won't save you.
