not decompressing it to a file or folder does not mean you are not decompressing at all. You have at least decompress to memory but yeah you can use a small io buffer for this. Also depends a lot of the compression algorithm man

Obviously, yes. There is no way to decompress without decompressing, but these databses are 50GB or more when decompressed, and I think not everyone has the space to spare for one, let alone multiple of them.
