I was wondering how people crack games and what do they get out of cracking it?

I'll explain in terms of old school PC games.

Old school games often only did a check to see if the original game CD was inserted.

This check was written in a function, usually in C, and if the disc is inserted, it would return 'true' or something like that, and the game can be played.

When they compile the game, all of that gets compiled to machine code.

When a cracker gets ahold of the game executable, they use a debugger to try and find the function that does the checks. They then remove all of the actual check logic and makes the function always return true, so the game will always play, regardless of the CD being in the drive.

Nowadays the checks are more complex, but the general ideas remain the same: you find the checks and make them always return a passing value.

Edit: cheats are somewhat similar to develop. You use a debugger, find the bits that you need to edit or monitor and write a program to inject your cheat code. That's how Action Replays worked too.
