This is by far not new. Playing MitM in the supply chain is still a key method...
Methods like this dates back to the '60. In which printers were shipped with modified ROM's (yes old) towards middle east countries.
Using explosives on this scale is indeed new. Makes you wonder what your devices hold in store for you... ;-)

Interesting the Taiwanese pager manufacturer Gold Apollo was catching heat for this, which they fully denied making these specific pagers. Ops movie type stuff for sure.
