I found two promising looking email providers as alternatives:
disroot.org
riseup.net
Not 100% sure if they're safe but I will give it a try.

At least before, the Riseup mail service was accessible by invitation only. As for the security and anonymity of their services, I read in some reviews of VPN's and anonymity services that they were not as reliable as in the beginning, but maybe that's just one point of view.
Disroot seems to work well in this aspect. However, in all these services it is always advisable to read their internal rules of operation and the “fine print” to avoid surprises.
