DNS slips, WebRTC exposes, and logs that ‘don’t exist’ mysteriously show up in court cases. I ran a custom setup with a double-hop VPS and Tor last week, and it held up under a dummy trace, but it’s overkill for most.

Are VPNs just security theater in 2025, or am I too paranoid?

personally i use mullvad but even then i use it in a public area, like a library or a mcdonalds or something like that.

if mullvad was storing information then they would be losing out on alot of money.

Fr if we need to compare between all the VPNs that are existing in the market right now, Mullvad it's absolute the best if all you need is stay anonymize. Obviously as always it's impossible trust them 100% on their no-log policy as they are just a company, but I trust them more than other VPNs. Also the partner with Tor Project on creating the Mullvad Browser is a good sign of their intention.

Self-managing your VPS can be a good solution, but it cost you time and money to maintain it. On the other hand, if you're relying on the hosting provider's managed services, this setup may not be good for privacy. The hosting provider can still track your activities, as their primary goal is to ensure a good service, without prioritizing privacy concerns.

If your goal it's just stay anonymize I think a VPN with a good browser should be enough, no one care about you especially if you didn't do nothing and you are not a international wanted.

Yes, but it's garbage, it breaks notoriously and is flagged as a malware

A VPN is useless with a warrant

Even with a warrant, how they can track if there is no log at all?

You have to understand the difference between Anonymity, Pseudodinymity, confidentiality and threatmodel => from who are you hidding for and why?

No one is anonymous on the global internet due to the infrastructure designed to store all prints you made.

To be completely anonymous you'll have to create a complete new internet that you control from bottom to top..

Regular VPN are designed to hide your original IP, from your ISP and the website (or anything that you try to connect to) you are visiting, and create a secure tunnel that encrypt data and avoiding most of MDM attack from guy that could analyse the network you are in.

Nowadays, due to fingerprinting or deeppacket inspection, it's really hard to become anonymous (as you understand it). Best advice, be as normal as possible, hide in plain sight within the mass.
