In my opinion Telegram does not exactly have an alternative just based on the number of users it has and how it allows to have channels and chat groups separately and allowing you to use a username as your identity without the need of exposing your phone number per say, Signal, Threema or any other app would have one drawback or another over Telegram strictly speaking in terms of ease of use and ease of access.

I hardly use Telegram, the only reason I still have it is because everyone refuses to change to something better. I use XMPP/Jabber for everything I do, that's what I would suggest.
