The Drug/Hack Connection

During my research I have noticed that a number of hackers report using various substances (e.g., marijuana, MDMA, cocaine, etc.). I am interested in understanding the connection between the use of illicit substances and hacking activities. On the one hand, it seems counter intuitive that a hacker would use substances as it may impede their ability to focus and be highly effective. On the other hand, some substances may be useful in being able to stay alert for long hacking sessions.

Alternatively, it may be that substances are used outside of the hacking activities, perhaps to relax when not hacking.

Are you a hacker who uses substances? Do you think the substances help you hack? Help you relax? What is the connection between hacking and drugs?

Good point. The use of drugs is most definitely not limited to hackers. I think someone else mentioned that there is a lot of pressure in certain fields to constantly improve your performance. Drugs is one way of gaining an edge.

This was 40 years ago, the average person in the finance/ banking/ whatever sensationalized money type of field just takes crazy amounts of adderall. That's why so many fucking die by 30 from a heart attack in the office. Also I think it's common to screen for drugs in new hires any way.

drug addiction is one of the most common motives for a criminal career, isn't it? I can imagine that many "hackers" are not high while "hacking", instead they hack while sober to afford the drugs they were addicted to in the first place
