I dont mind virtualbox for lighter duty vm work on my laptop. It has no problem with streaming audio or video or running a handful of apps. It has ran fine on a ssd for years. Laptop is an old hp with an i5 and 16gb ram. I just make sure to keep the vhd stored on a separate ssd from main boot ssd. Less i/o load on the primary ssd.

Out of the two, I'd choose virtualbox. I mainly use qemu virt manager though.

try an older version or try increasing the vram for your virtual machine. if you cant increase vram just add another monitor

For windows I recommend hyper-v. I stopped using vbox due to ongoing performance issues, freezes.

VirtualBox obviously. Even if VMWare is free now it doesn't deserve downloads for having a paid version when a better alternative that does the exact same thing and has better performance is free.
