If you're using Tor that's probably a lot of it.  Every packet of data sent or received gets encrypted 3 times over, then goes through 3 hops through different nodes, run by volunteers a lot of the time, that could be on opposite sides of the planet from one another before it even begins its journey to the actual server.

Because you are connecting through tor, every website on the darkweb is slow. My internet speed while using tor: 5mps, while on a home network (with a vpn) 240+mps.
