Why a hardware wallet and not for example a Veracrypt encrypted USB? What's the added value?

Veracrypt encrypted is a good idea. But how about virus and infections? An ordinary usb can easily be infected

Just put the Veracrypt wallet on a USB that is only connected when you need it (is almost never)?

You stated in your previous message that you're worried about the possibility of virus infections on an encrypted USB drive. In that case Exodus desktop wallet by itself isn't enough, you have to combine it with something like Trezor. Yes Exodus encrypts your private keys on the host device, but that's the same scenario as with the encrypted USB drive. One could easily also argue that you're even more vulnerable when the keys reside on your computer instead of a remote USB you only connect rarely. 

Trezor costs $80-200 USD depending on where you live, but it's definitely worth it if you handle crypto transactions relatively often.
