I'd start with community college maybe. It's not as expensive as a traditional university. I think it also depends on where you live. Some places I think you need a college degree in order to get a job that pays decently.

Not a straight forward answer. For certain professional careers, you obiously have no choice but to get a degree - such as an engineering job. For may jobs, not necessary but will help you get your foot in the door and most likely will have you start at a much higher salary. But if you are very good at what you do and work hard, everntualyl you will catch up.
