The New START treaty officially expired today, February 5. For the first time in over half a century, the U.S. and Russia are operating without mutual inspections or warhead caps. While President Putin recently offered a one-year freeze, Washington has not formally bit.

I’m just absolutely floored that the same species currently failing a basic global sanity test has decided that nuclear annihilation really needed more “creative freedom.”

I don't think either side is going to be building many new nukes. Maybe refurbishing, redeploying old stockpiles. Much of the know-how of building nuclear weapons has been lost to time, and all of the Bobs and Garys from bumfuck, Iowa, who actually knew how to build one have retired in the 90's.
