  • I was scrolling through YouTube and came across an intriguing video about a malware named 'BadBIOS', I'll leave the link at the bottom of this thread. Has anyone researched it and has some extra info to add? It just seems rlly interesting.

  • To sum it up, it was a malware that supposedly would lie in the BIOS, and could spread without WIFI and to any other computer in its network due to the assumption that it's spread through sound, [Infected Device releases High Frequency sound -> Other devices around pick it up -> They are infected -> Repeat]

I recommend watching the video below since it explains it in a far better and more entertaining way.

First, because the BIOS operates in a digital environment and cannot process or interpret analog sound waves as executable code without external hardware modifications
Second, because ultrasonic sound lacks the data bandwidth necessary to transmit complex malware instructions, let alone BIOS-specific exploits.

Keep in mind not all of motherboards have the same bios, so this "malware" has to exploit and adapt to pretty much every version of bios

Yeah this was mentioned in the vid, but the guy who made the claims of BadBIOS is apparently a reputable and trusted person so idk. Seems unlikely but cool story nonetheless

He made it up, and it's actually insane that anyone would believe it. Ultrasound isn't something you can conveniently leverage to infect BIOS, the guy also claimed it had a separate component that ran on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Would this happen to be true, it'd be without a doubt the most sophisticated malware ever written.
