People often use their full names on Google because they forced it a few years back.

Not a lot of yahoo users use gmail.

During the Google+ merger, you were forced to use a real name on all Google sites, that includes YouTube etc, not just Gmail. It's not enforced anymore.

So the Yahoo user had to have a google+ account?

Yes, around 2012 YouTube forced you to create one, so if they had a YouTube account, they would have a Google+ account too. When G+ was retired, they were turned into the Google accounts we know today. It's separate to Gmail, though a Gmail inbox can be linked to a Google account, it isn't required. It's confusing - such is the life and death of company subsidiaries and mergers.

But yeah, this was a long time ago. I'm not sure if it will help OP but it has helped me in the past. I don't think Yahoo has an API for this despite forcing you to set a first and last name.
