There was a story recently about botnets running on toothbrushes that were blue-tooth enabled. And vx-underground lost its shit and tried to get Vice to retract it.

basically anything that has a internet connection to the outside world can be used as a DDoS zombie device (computers, routers, smart fridges, smart watches,...) nowadays people have been investing a lot in infecting IoT devices because theyre normally very easy to pwn, and theres being a great rise in their manufacture and peoples interest in buying it
a good example would be the smart toothbrushes (yea i know, sounds dumb) that got infected and started to be used as DDoS zombies lol

The toothbrush thing was a hoax.

Most new booter skids just buy servers and use them to perform "DDoS", the average swagged out skid >>mirai<< botnet with 400k bots is actually just around 10 Hetzner servers they pay for every month. Actual, capable botnets, are not common.

The market has shifted away from DDoS mostly towards credential harvesting, so it's mostly just skids running botnets.
