For something more recent, To Your Eternity Season 1 and maybe S2, but not S3. Also Violet Evergarden has a few moments on top of being just an all around beautifully animated show.

Grave of the Fireflies movie is supposed to be sad too, but I haven't gotten around to watching that yet.
