Android TV Exposing Users' Emails and Files

Some smart TVs, set-top boxes, and streaming sticks with the Android TV operating system expose the content of email inboxes and other services linked to a Google account, such as cloud storage. An attacker needs physical access to the device to exploit this vulnerability. Nevertheless, recent incidents highlight how careless handling of Google accounts can lead to data leaks, even for products beyond PCs or smartphones not primarily designed to process personal information. The security gap could pose significant risks for Android TVs in companies that improperly dispose of or resell devices, as well as for publicly accessible devices in waiting areas like doctor's surgeries.

Youtuber Cameron Gray first noticed the vulnerability while configuring an Android TV a few months ago. However, Google only acknowledged the issue after it garnered attention from politicians and the media. Gray warned in a video that users should never log in with a Google account to an Android TV device containing sensitive data. Beyond typical TV functions like YouTube, cybercriminals could potentially access anything through a compromised Google account, including emails via Gmail, files on Google Drive, or other services linked to the account.
